How do you express yourself in your business?
Ask any successful business owner and they’ll tell you that their business isn’t merely a business — it’s a pure expression of their personality.
We each have a unique personality and one of the benefits of going into business is to be able to express your personality for a living!
Are you a Manager, incredibly effective at improving systems and processes, making organizations efficient and more effective?
Perhaps you’re an Artist who loves to design and create products and experiences of enormous, unparalleled value?
Or, are you driven by the massive rewards of taking big risks, always on the scout for opportunities and talent, like an Entrepreneur?
Just as any great business isn’t created overnight, developing mastery of the methods, strategies and psychology is entirely dependent on what you bring, how you excel and what gifts you contribute to the business greater success.
At the same time, if you avoid areas of the business that aren’t in your skill set, you may be doing damage to the business and its potential success.
There are 4 main personality profiles, that we can be aligned to and when we are in our flow, are aligned to one, maybe even two and when we are able to express ourselves, we are extremely effective, efficient, productive and profitable.
The problem is, when we are busy trying to do all the ‘other’ things that we aren’t so good at, we do them poorly and we do less of the stuff that we are good at, that is of benefit to the business, make sense?
This is where the saying, employ people around you who are talented at doing the tasks that you aren’t good at.
The four main DISC personality profiles are;
Dominance; we often find that the business owner or CEO is a dominant “alpha” person who is impatient, acts quickly and demands results.
Influence; a person who loves to talk, is the life of the party, everyone loves them and they are great on the front desk or in sales.
Steadiness; this person is fantastic at keeping everyone on the team heading in the right direction. They might be a line manager, client relations manager or team leader.
Compliance; a staff member who has an impeccable attention to detail. They rather work alone, they are not so good with customers but fantastic at balancing the books or ensuring your business gets paid.
It doesn’t matter what personality profile fits you, as long as you know what your profile is and you ensure that you align yourself to the tasks that make the most of your skill set.
The next step is to delegate the tasks that you hate (or are not good at) to people who love doing those tasks!
As a business owner, we can make the mistake of partnering up with or employing people we like, this is great from a social perspective but can be catastrophic for the business.
Each role in the business is a perfect fit for a certain type of personality, it is your job to ensure that you are doing the role you are suited to and that you employ people who are perfectly suited to the other roles that you have in the business.
When you do this, you will have an extremely efficient, productive, vibrant, growing and profitable business.
