Are you unwittingly sabotaging Your Business?
Have you ever sat back and said to yourself “why is it so hard to make this business a success?”
I remember George from Auscon Homes saying that to me and I told him about what happens when you have the right people working for you in the right position, and how because they all click together, they take their weight off the business owners shoulders…
George replied “Is that real or just a fairytale”
If you’re finding it hard, there is probably a very good reason for that. You may have the wrong people, on your team or you could have good people, in the wrong roles, let me explain…
Often when we employ people we can make the mistake of engaging with people who we like or who remind us of ourselves.
This is what we do naturally and it works well at a party or BBQ, but in the work place it is a guarantee for failure!
The last people we want to employ are the ones who remind us of ourselves; unless their personality profile and skills are matched to the type of role you are attempting to fill.
The first step is knowing what personality profile you have and then understand how you work best, the next step is in understanding the roles you have or want to fill in your business and what type of person you should employ in that role.
Generally speaking there are 4 main personality traits that people have;
- Dominance – direct, results-oriented, strong-willed and forceful.
- Influence – outgoing, enthusiastic, optimistic and lively.
- Steadiness – even-tempered, accommodating, patient and humble.
- Conscientiousness – analytical, reserved, precise and systematic.
Each of these personality traits is better suited to certain roles in the business than others…
So when you look at recruiting people for your business or partners to go into business with, it is beneficial to recruit them after first knowing what personality profile you have and then secondly to know the personality profile that suits the role you are attempting to fill.
If you are after a leader, CEO, general manager or sales manager, a Dominant person (1) is often good for this role.
A person of influence (2) often loves to talk, socialise, is the centre of attention and the life of the party, they are great for the role of front desk, working the front desk reception and in a selling role.
Steadiness (3) is a great personality for a line manager, trainer or negotiator. They are great at keeping the time on side and lifting them up to deliver on time and without too many dramas.
Finally the conscientious (4) person is perfectly suited to work on the numbers, in accounts, on the spreadsheets, providing accurate and reliable feedback on where the business is at. Often very intelligent doesn’t like the lime light or being the centre of attention, this person works perfectly well, but better alone.
If you have the wrong person in a particular role, they may struggle, be easily distracted, full of excuses or simply unhappy in that role. They could be fantastic in the business, just placed in the wrong position.
Knowing that in our ideal situation, a certain type of personality trait comes out, in saying that we can apply ourselves in certain tasks and in certain situations to adapt a preferred personality type in order to achieve a certain outcome or task (managers/executives and CEO’S especially)
Finally, knowing how to communicate with each personality trait is essential to;
- Firstly, be able to be understood and to be listened to
- Secondly, to get along with them
- Thirdly, to get tasks completed correctly, their first time in the time frame that is required
