Are you just surviving when you should be thriving?
I had a wonderful coaching session with a young lady yesterday and we discussed the fundamentals of running a business and with a little more effort, what is required to make it a roaring success!
She is young, in her 20’s and has recently purchased her first business…
We touched on topics like;
- how the business looks
- how we treat our prospects and clients when they call or come in
- how we market to get more clients in and keep them coming in
During the course of our session we reached the topic of separating ourselves from the business, for the sake of the business and running the business in a way that considers the business first, over;
- you, the owner
- the customers
- the staff
The business must be its own separate, independently existing entity (which from a legal and commercial perspective it often is) unfortunately many small to medium sized business owners don’t cut the umbilical cord and the business (just) survives, like the business owner in a symbiotic state.
Unfortunately many of us forget the reason we went into business in the first place…
- be your own boss
- work the hours you want
- make a fortune
- have as many holidays as you want every year
- look after the partner and kids
We go into business to thrive, not to survive!
So the return on the investment must be greater than you would ever get from shares or property, it just isn’t worth the risk, blood, sweat and tears of running your own business, makes sense!
We often get comfortable in our own business. Remembering back to when we worked for ‘the man’ be it government or corporate. When we put in untold hours, away from the family, stress, worry and deciding that we would never do that again.
The issue is that now that it is your business, you should put in that amount of effort, until you can get someone in to replace you and free you up to focus your time on what you really want to do with your time…
Until that day comes, we often can’t be bothered, put it off and do the things we have always done…
The secret to taking that extra step from surviving to thriving…
This first article I have for you is all about the definition of ‘happiness’ v’s ‘meaning’ and how one of these ‘states of mind’ serves you and the other imprisons you …
When things get tough, one inspires you and the other takes the wind out of you…

The second article relates to meaning in the work place and how you can inspire your team to;
- Come in early
- Work hard all day
- Take ownership of their role in the business
- Only take sick days when they need them, not when they want them
- Go home late
- Love working for you
